Today has been Sci-Fi day! I checked out IMDB’s "Top 250" Sci-Fi Films and the first one that caught my eye that I hadn’t seen was Blade Runner! Between Framestore working on ‘Blade Runner 2049’ last year and the original being set in 2019 the year I’m trying to celebrate it seemed like an obvious choice.
I thought the world building was amazing and the visuals through the city were really atmospheric and dystopian. I really loved the matte paintings! I found the story quite dated and slow paced though.
I can definitely see why it’s a landmark film and made such a strong impression on so many people when it was released. Back then it would have been mindblowing. Having come to it from this time period though and being more accustomed to the pacing of more modern films, I found that it was a bit slow for my taste. I was very into the ending though with the origami unicorn, athough apparently that’s only in the directors cut!
I’ve seen bits and pieces of 2049 that Framestore worked on but haven’t watched the full thing as I was waiting to see the original first. I don’t think I’d rewatch this one, but I am glad to have now ticked it off my list and am excited to see a fresh take on it. I’ll make a point of watching it soon.
Overall…Blade Runner: 7/10
